Jody Lawson is an artist & illustrator from the picturesque market town of Skipton in North Yorkshire.
Originally from the village of Rathmell not too far from Skipton, Jody has grown up with a keen interest in the beauty & tenacity of nature. As evident from a number of recent illustrations, one common influence is that of the various insects, arachnids and other mini-beasts of the invertebrate world.
After already taking A-levels in Art & Design, Biology & Chemistry, he returned to education after a few years to study Psychology, Business Studies, Film Studies & Media Studies before earning an Honours degree in Film Production.
Shortly after, his health began to decline. Beginning with steadily worsening colitis symptoms & culminating with severe migraines, deafness, persistent vomiting, loss of taste & loss of balance he was eventually diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma: a type of brain tumour.
After 12 hour surgery to remove most of the tumour, surgery to have an abutment drilled into his skull in order to anchor a hearing aid, & gamma treatment after subsequent tumour regrowth, Jody has also been left with severe cognitive fatigue, facial numbness, visual difficulties & more. Jody is pursuing art & illustration as a means to stimulate brain activity.
Most notable amongst his many influences in his work come from the world of movies, & the duality of horror & beauty. The aspiration to invoke an intense emotional reaction is often the driving force behind Jody’s creation of art.
